34 Beautiful Fireplace Ideas for Cozy Warmth All Year Long

home fireplace design ideas

The living room features a sofa by Terence Woodgate, 620 chairs by Dieter Rams for Vitsœ, and an Oluce Atollo 239 lamp by Vico Magistretti. The wood-burning fireplace sits along one wall in the room, with a bright orange flue acting as a sculptural focal point. Built in 1957, Witthoefft House was designed and lived in by the architect Arthur Witthoefft. At the time, he was an architect in the Manhattan office of corporate modernists Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. This recently restored 1957 modernist masterpiece features a freestanding travertine-and-steel fireplace, open on all four sides, that divides the living and dining areas. "I’m not trying to hide anything. I wanted to stay true to the industrial look," explains Owen Wright, the owner of this Brooklyn loft.

Fireplace Decor Ideas to Elevate the Focal Point of Your Home

The stone accent wall received a coat of white paint for a cleaner look, but its rugged texture stays in step with the room's rustic aesthetic. A live-edge, floating wood mantel introduces even more natural charm and provides a stylish perch for vintage accessories. This brick fireplace idea is a go-to option for people who want to give their modern living room a rustic and earthy touch. The fireplace material completely blends in with the decor, furniture and the colour theme of the space.

Marble Fireplace

Design studio PlaidFox worked with this Vancouver home’s existing architecture in designing the ’70s-chic fireplace. Leave it to Andre Herrero, cofounder of the architecture and design studio Charlap Hyman & Herrero, to give us a fireplace that’s as cool as it is cerebral. In his girlfriend’s West Hollywood apartment, he clad the fireplace in stainless steel panels, a move that hides the TV and also nods to the Paris home of Yves Saint Laurent muse Betty Catroux. Light up your living room with these decorating hacks — even if you have a faux fireplace. Although the fire surround may seem like the be-all and end-all when framing a fireplace, the insert can add that extra bit of drama that will elevate the whole look. Prior to working for the Future plc family, I've worked on a number of consumer events including the Ideal Home Show, Grand Designs Live, and Good Homes Magazine.

Use Warm Metal Tones

A long, low fireplace is mounted into a sleek marble wall, which complements the other natural textures and materials in the room. Large windows surrounding the fireplace in this room by Erin Sander Design make the natural outdoor landscaping a focal point. The ivory-toned fireplace extends out from the wall, helping the space feel more intimate, while a floor-to-ceiling installation of horizontal wood planking at varying depths adds visual warmth. While a space with high, open ceilings can feel empty and bare, interior designer Nadia Watts uses molding, flowing drapes, a tall cabinet, and a black fireplace surround to ground the space. Interior designer Rayman Boozer of Apartment 48 in New York City centered a colorful den in an Upper East Side townhouse around a black marble fireplace surround with white veining.

What types of fireplaces are there?

This modern farmhouse-style fireplace mixes several different materials that harmonize well together. A natural wood mantel, white shiplap, and white brick create many different textures that all contribute to the modern farmhouse feel. Accessorize with decor pieces such as framed art or a small animal sculpture. Colorful accessories contrast this fireplace's white brick hearth and walls, giving the living room a cozy, cottage-style look. Pastoral artwork, brilliant blue vases, and other collected accents fill the mantel and adjacent shelves to establish a brightly-hued palette. This tiled fireplace design corresponds with the room's high-contrast color palette and eclectic style, creating a striking and cohesive look.

Mix Colonial and Modern

In the redesign, the fireplace received a faux patina application, which lightens the area’s color scheme, creating an updated look on a classic home design. Architect Patrick Gwynn designed The Homewood in Surrey, a family-owned Victorian property. This home is known for its large rooms and luxurious feel; the fireplace needed to adhere to the home’s level of sophistication. In this sitting room, Gwynn installed a fireplace with a granite-color accent wall that becomes a beautiful addition to the interior by balancing out the room’s color profile.

Curling up by the fire typically rustles up images of large, rustic stone hearths with crackling logs. But, these traditional fireplaces don't quite align with modern design enthusiasts. Maintain a sleek, clean look by recessing your TV into the wall above your fireplace. Work with an electrician to relocate or add outlets so you can plug the TV in behind the unit rather than having the cords hang down in front of the fireplace. This television closely mirrors the firebox dimensions below, creating a sense of balance.

Vintage Fireplace Decor

Adding stone around the garden paths and beneath the firepit will also elevate the way it looks due to the different materials and textures. If you want to create a cohesive yard, throw in some wooden chairs to bring it all together. Find a beautiful hue and paint your walls, trim and fireplace (the bricks and surround) to create a chic accent wall. A shiplap wall adds an extra layer of visual interest to this modern fireplace.

How do I choose a stove for my fireplace?

The fireplace mantel design contrasts the stone surround and corresponds with the pops of white throughout the room. Furnishings in grays and light taupes reflect the natural tones in the fireplace for a cohesive look. A fireplace wall designed to accentuate this room's high, peaked ceilings includes windows that angle upward and a chimney-inspired hood. This coastal living space by Phillips incorporates a sleek black fireplace—perfect for curling up after chilly autumn walks along the shore. The fireplace is balanced by a television mounted above it and asymmetrical wall layouts with tones of cool blue, warm gold, and orange on either side. A natural wood mantel, floral pillows, and an arrangement of soft ferns make the space feel soft and inviting.

Hiller took the suggestion and now enjoys the warmth of a fireplace and the full square footage of her living room. The living room and dining room were originally separated by a central fireplace, which interior designer Nicole Hollis removed to create this great room. She installed a modern, custom eight-foot-long open gas fireplace in the living room, equipped with sensors that automatically turn it off when someone gets too near to the flames.

Whether you are opting for an original design or a newer piece, it is important that you know how to clean a fireplace in order to keep yours looking stunning. Inside a Rolling Hut by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects, a metal fireplace keeps the compact interior of the chalet cozy. You will find one-of-a-kind treasures you won't be able to get anywhere else. Instead of flanking both sides of the fireplace with storage, Finley opted for lower cabinets and open shelving on just one side—leaving space for additional seating to the left of the fireplace.

Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your living room or bedroom, take inspiration from these modern fireplace ideas. A fireplace can instantly bring warmth and coziness to a room, but it’s also an opportunity to add style and character to a space. A fireplace is a natural focal point you can build a seating arrangement around, as well as a spot to showcase art or seasonal decor. From luxurious marble and intricate millwork details to reclaimed wood and shiplap accent walls, this collection of modern fireplaces includes something for every style, room size, and budget. The white-washed, aged wood of the fireplace surround blends into the room's neutral color palette, while the dark firebox and hearth are a break in the monochromatic scheme. Bucolic wallpaper envelops the room, and the part of the pattern positioned above the fireplace mimics the look of a landscape painting.

Mosaics offer everything from small detailed designs to vintage graphic looks. Where traditional designs use brick or stone for a warm, rustic appearance, a mid-century modern fireplace takes a minimal approach and can use materials such as marble or glass. Everyone loves a fireplace, that symbol of hearth, home, and cozy nights spent cuddling up with the ones you love. This freestanding wood-burning fireplace design for the dining room has a very traditional appeal to it. Many homeowners prefer its warmth and the soothing crackling sounds of the wood logs. However, fire safety is a must with this kind of fireplace design so keep the area around it clear of any flammable materials.

If the fireplace ideas you are searching for require a little more imagination, this one should please. Set at eye-height for dinner guests, this electric fire is almost like a piece of art on the wall beyond the dining table. In a low-lit room at night, it would create a warm, inviting glow that will encourage diners to linger. Thanks to a contemporary interior that she’s been updating for a decade, modern architect Abigail Turin has learned to love her traditional 1925 San Francisco home. Rather than indulge her impulse and strip away the home’s traditional flourishes, Turin embraced the dark in her striking living room—the deep paint is Le Corbusier’s 4320J from Les Couleurs Suisse.

The soft curves of the sofa, footstool, coffee table, and vase filler—plus the crackling fire—keep the room comfortable and inviting. Simple doesn't mean boring in this space, designed by Hilary Matt Interiors, where an almost monochromatic color palette of white, cream, tan, and champagne creates a restful sense of balance. The fireplace surround frames the box to create a layered look and add depth. A sunny formal living space, designed by Watts, is anchored with a curving, carved fireplace surround. Trim at the top of the floor-to-ceiling bookshelves on either side mimics the shape of the mantel, while the symmetry of a pair of tall candleholders is offset by a pop of green in the foliage-filled vase.

She talks about the number of students that have been suspended, but also the number of faculty that she’s had removed from the classroom that are being investigated for comments that either violate some of Columbia’s rules or make students uncomfortable. One case in particular really underscores this. And when this spring rolls around, the stars finally align. And I think if we zoom out for a second, it’s worth bearing in mind that she tried to choose a different path here than her counterparts at Harvard or Penn. And after all of this, she’s kind of ended up in the exact same thicket, with people calling for her job with the White House, the Mayor of New York City, and others. Maybe not calling on her to resign quite yet, but saying, I don’t know what’s going on your campus. Can I — I just have a question for you, which is all journalism, student journalism or not student journalism, is a first draft of history. And I wonder if we think of this as a historic moment for Columbia, how you imagine it’s going to be remembered. It was something truly unimaginable, over 100 students slash other individuals are arrested from our campus, forcefully removed.

“From fluted to reeded to scallops, we'll be seeing this on cabinetry, walls, and unexpected places throughout the home,” says Nicole Salceda of Eye For Pretty. “I have seen a rise in more traditional design aspects especially coastal Grandma which I believe will continue into 2023,” says Gray Walker, of Gray Walker Interiors and an Ambassador of The New York Design Center’s What’s New, What’s Next. Ralph Gilles was the recipient of the EyesOn Design Lifetime Design Achievement Award. Each year the event attracts members of the transportation design community, collectors, and the public to celebrate and reflect on design. This 36th anniversary will bring together thousands of auto enthusiasts from the transportation and design communities, as well as automobile collectors and members of the general public, to celebrate and reflect on design.

And it turns out the Professor didn’t even realize he was under investigation. So he’s learning about this from the hearing too. So what this all adds up to, I think, is a performance so in line with what the lawmakers themselves wanted to hear, that at certain points, these Republicans didn’t quite know what to do with it. For example, just four days after the harrowing October 7 attack, a former Columbia undergraduate beat an Israeli student with a stick.

Still, if you're planning to sell your home in the coming year or need some direction for your latest design project, trends are important to consider. Here are fourteen trends interior designers are forecasting will be here to stay for 2023. From electric cars to organic food and OEKO-TEX fabrics, we’ve all become more concerned about the environmental impact of our purchases.

The 2024 commemorative poster for the 37th annual car show was unveiled as part of the announcement. Painted by artist Nicolas Rousselet, the subject of the artwork is Prof Murray's McLaren F1, widely lauded as the finest driving machine built for the public road, and possibly the fastest production road car the world will ever see. And by that, I mean, this thing that seemed to start at Columbia is literally spreading. And from the administration’s perspective, they say, well, yeah, you can say that and you can think that.

Gather a gaggle of girlfriends and settle in for cucumber and dill tea sandwiches, macaroons, scones, and more. Tea service starts at $29 per person and is served on Saturday and Sunday starting at noon. Tea service is also available for takeout. Fabricated from a single piece of bamboo, this prototypical structure is designed to house the ancient and highly proscribed rituals of the Japanese tea ceremony. Intended to be easily assembled and dismantled, it has its origins in the elegance, simplicity and portability of the traditional oriental parasol. The cylindrical tea house is 2750mm in diameter, its proportions dictated by the need to accommodate two tatami mats.

Designed by Kelly Wearstler, the impossibly chic space features unique floral arrangements and plenty of seating arrangements to choose from. While the tables that border the elongated booth by the window catch the most light, larger parties can opt for the secluded alcoves or one of the lower-slung coffee tables. Each service includes a glass of Veuve Clicquot or a non-alcoholic sparkling wine, plus scones, sandwiches and a rotating array of sweets that put a California spin on classic flavors. (In particular, we found the aged goat cheese and chive scone to be outstanding.) For $20 more, guests can also indulge in bottomless champagne. Pasadena’s understated Callisto Tea House serves two options for afternoon tea service on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. The standard menu is priced at $27.50 and includes three savory vegan toasts, a scone with cream and jam, a cupcake, and a pot of tea.

Pick from an array of high-quality teas, including the Villa’s Art of Tea signature blend, which adds a touch of lavender to Chinese black tea. Compared to the Getty Center’s admittedly lackluster afternoon tea offering, the Villa’s selection of vegetarian-friendly scones, sweets and sandwiches is delicious, and far better than it needs to be. For a kitschy, distinctly English afternoon tea, this beloved Pasadena establishment offers two reservation-only seatings on weekend afternoons at 1 and 4pm.

Beginning Graphic Design: Fundamentals of Design

design fundamentals

Designs with poor contrast have elements that can be easily missed. A great example of ‘whitespace’ is the blogging platform, Medium. Medium’s website doesn’t distract its users with ad banners or frustrating pop-ups. Instead, it prioritizes the right content and shows information that readers want to see. Instead of showing the published date, it shows the length of time it takes to read – which is very clever.

Beginning Graphic Design -

“White Space in design composition is the same as the use of silence in a musical composition. Without proportionate use of silence, music is unstructured. Similarly, without white space, design is unstructured and difficult to consume." Proportion is the relationship between two or more elements in a design, particularly the size and scale of them. When things are "proportionate”, it means there’s a coordination between them that makes the design look aesthetically pleasing.

Lines and shapes

It could be anything, from using a certain font color to adding a repetitive pattern to a social media post. Where symmetrical designs can be quite static and predictable, asymmetrical balance can give designs a more dynamic feel. Symmetrical design uses an imaginary vertical (or sometimes horizontal) line to divide a design into two halves around a central point. Elements of equal visual weight are balanced on each side of the axis to create symmetry. The number of design principles is not fixed and can vary depending on the source or context.

Unity/Harmony

design fundamentals

You want to make sure things look “right”— that the elements look as if they belong together. As Jared Spool, an expert on design and usability, says, “Good design, when it’s done well, becomes invisible. It’s only when it’s done poorly that we notice it.” This is why good design is tricky to define. Just be careful not to go overboard—too much texture in a single design can quickly become overwhelming.

Even images that are less realistic use similar techniques to create dimension. Below, the lighting and shading are stylized, but still hint at form and depth. The fundamentals can be intimidating at first, especially if you don't consider yourself an artist.

The lesser the matter, the more premium a piece of content is perceived to be. One can also use negative spaces innovatively to say more while saying nothing. The principle of design used to govern the usage of white spaces comes into play with minimalist designs in a significant way.

Some designs make use of negative space to create interesting visual effects. For example, the famous World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) logo makes use of the confusion between positive shape and negative space to create the image of a panda. Unity in design principles refers to the cohesive arrangement of elements that ensures all parts of a composition work together harmoniously. It's achieved when each element appears to be an integral part of the overall design, resulting in a complete and aesthetically pleasing piece.

Visual hierarchy is communicated through a number of design elements including size, color, and spatial composition. Establishing visual hierarchy is also achieved by drawing upon design principles such as contrast and emphasis. Visual hierarchy creates organization and allows viewers to navigate through your design. The elements of visual design make up the fundamental building blocks of a product. Learning how to achieve unity, gestalt, hierarchy, balance, contrast, scale, dominance, and similarity will be extremely useful as you work in visual design. The elements of visual design — line, shape, negative/white space, volume, value, colour and texture — describe the building blocks of a product’s aesthetics.

Branding is how you bring your business, products, services and story to life. By leveraging all of the graphic design basics we’ve covered in this guide to build a brand that feels true to who you are. Proper balance and alignment are core principles of design.

All visual elements within the composition relate to one another in a manner that is both cohesive and aesthetically pleasing. In this section we've provided some useful resources for students wishing to further their studies in graphic design. The information was authored by Calvin Rye, MFA alumnus of the Graphic Design program at CalArts in consultation with CalArts' Graphic Design faculty and our Office of Admissions. These are essential components of any application to a graphic design program, as well as a freelance graphic designer's toolkit. Regardless if you are applying to schools or looking for work in the field, we hope you find these tips and resources useful to your goals.

In this photograph of the Taj Mahal the symmetrical balance is found in the architecture itself, the garden design, and the reflecting pool. The composition of the photo also contributes to the overall symmetry. The fountain heads that line the center of the reflecting pool serve to bisect the entire photo wherein each side mirrors the other. The fiber used to create this hat is an example of tactile texture. If one were to pick up the hat, or wear it, the texture would be felt through touch. Because fiber is a ubiquitous material in our lives we can deduce what an object like this may feel like or be utilized for by just seeing an image of it.

If you're wondering how to apply these design principles to forms, you'll want to dive into our guide. Movement can be harnessed to distract, direct, and pull the viewer’s gaze around a design. It distinguishes your company from the millions of others out there, so when folks see your designs they immediately know it’s your business. It also creates a sense of consistency by using a repeating motif that the viewer comes to expect. This makes it particularly useful when it comes to creating your distinct brand identity. Where objects in real life carry physical weight, elements in design carry visual weight.

The words “Interaction Design Foundation” form an implied semicircular line in our logo. Focus on emotion – the pleasure of use is as vital as ease of use; arouse users’ passion for increasing engagement. Use defaults wisely – when you offer predetermined, well-considered options, you help minimize users’ decisions and increase efficiency. Show users where they’ve come from and where they’re headed with signposts/cues. Don’t interrupt or give users obstacles – make apparent pathways that offer an easy ride.

For example, if you are creating a package design for a children’s toy brand, you wouldn’t want to use black. Instead, you would use colors such as yellow, orange, or red. Everywhere around us, graphic design is used to attract viewers and deliver the intended message. From social media posts to ads, to store signage to catalogs and magazines.

Unity can also be successful through alignment, rhythm, or continuation. To create a unified design, a designer must remember that all elements of a composition should work together to create visual satisfaction. Visual design is about creating and making the general aesthetics of a product consistent. To create the aesthetic style of a website or app, we work with fundamental elements of visual design, arranging them according to principles of design. These elements and principles together form the building blocks of visual design, and a firm understanding of them is crucial in creating a visual design of any product. Balance provides both stability and structure to a design.

Even during peak weekend hours, you’ll always be able to find an open table, and when you get hungry, you’ll find a food truck or two parked out front. The chef offers a variety of sauces to accompany the proteins, and we enjoyed the lingonberry demi-glace. Lingonberries are a tart yet slightly sweet berry related to the cranberry. Other sauces include everything from traditional hollandaise and bearnaise sauces to wild mushroom demi-glace and Port wine demi-glace. The menu at Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant and Cantina is a fiesta of options. The fajitas are a crowd-pleaser, sizzling with flavor as they arrive at your table. And if you’re a fan of seafood, the shrimp and lobster enchiladas are a must-try. If you like a bit of heat, dishes like the spicy carne asada or the Diablo shrimp won’t disappoint. Located at 109 Lincoln Avenue, just off Main Street, Briar Rose Chophouse and Saloon got its name from the Briar Rose Mine on Peak 10. In the late 1890s, silver miners would return to the Lincoln Street boarding house for a warm meal. Then it became a destination for diners looking for good food in a comfortable environment. As mining in the town evaporated, they abandoned the boarding house, and a fire burned it to the ground. In the 1960s, they rebuilt today’s building in the same place as the original construction. While they offer a complete Italian menu, their New York-style pizza is some of Breckenridge’s best.

Breckenridge features more than 200 structures on the National Register of Historic Places. We sat at Brunswick mirror-lined bar, a tradition since 1879. Unlike salon-goers during the Gold Rush, we didn’t need to watch our backs in the mirror. The north room holds a large safe so that a prospector could safeguard his gold while he had a drink in the saloon. Dinner entrees range from local favorites like buffalo short ribs to international dishes like paella and Scottish salmon.

We also like that the short menu of draft beers is big on IPAs, including the citrusy Figure 8 that you can order by the pitcher. Open since late 2023, Solarc is one of the newer breweries in LA—and one of the most unique, too. Rather than a typical line-up of IPAs and lagers, this Glassell Park brewery specializes in gruit, a medieval style of beer made with bittering agents other than hops. At Solarc, that means beer flavored with things like wormwood, black tea, and turmeric, and fermented with wild yeasts collected around Los Angeles.

Aurum Food & Wine Breckenridge uses locally sourced, seasonal ingredients to produce thoughtfully crafted dishes to highlight Colorado’s flavors.

To accompany their food, they offer Colorado craft beer on-tap, world-class wines, and hand-crafted cocktails. We enjoy The Canteen for lunch or a lighter dinner, where the ambiance is the rustic old west. They serve a great burger here, but what we love are the items featuring their smoker.
